On December 23, 2009, the President signed the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2010 which provides for a zero percent (0%) update to the 2010 Physician Fee Schedule for a two month period, January 1, 2010 through February 28, 2010.

Senate Passes Health Reform Bill
On December 24, 2009, the Senate passed Health Reform Bill 3590 also known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) by a vote of 60-39. The bill included numerous provisions of interest to the device manufacturers industry along with a device fee totaling $20 billion over the next 10 years starting in 2011.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced final changes to policies and payment rates for services to be furnished during calendar year (CY 2010) by over 1 million physicians and nonphysician practitioners who are paid under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS).

Annoucement:
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that most hospitals will receive an inflation update of 2.1 percent in their payment rates for services furnished to Medicare beneficiaries in outpatient departments. As required by Medicare law, CMS will reduce the update by 2.0 percentage points for hospitals that did not participate in quality data reporting for outpatient services or did not report the quality data successfully, resulting in a 0.1 percent update for those hospitals.
